about

I grew up on a small farm in northern New York State as close to Canada as you can get. Our growing season was quite short so it was more or less a challenge to grow anything in the time allowed. We had a donkey called Nellie and pretty much that was the only pet I remember growing up. It was not a very good pet as it was disagreeable and extremely stubborn, but it was not useful on the farm due to the stubbornness so you would have to consider her pet I guess. This song probably started out inspired by that verse in Swinging On A Star about being stubborn as a mule, and settled into some sort parable about myself since most of my songs are about me. -Jim

lyrics

Verse1:
I been a donkey, been a mule, I carried burdens, played the fool
I don't mind, I'll do it again, For a little while
I enjoy a little fun, But I'm there when there's work to be done
I'm told it's easier if you can do it with a smile

Bridge:
I hear you say "you might not get your due
If you always play a supporting role?"
But I'm not right in the spotlight
I tend to sputter and not talk right
So I'm better off not trying to be star of the show.

Verse 2:
So okay, I'm underpaid, but I'll sleep well at the end of the day
If I'm in your arms, that'll do to make it right
If you don't mind this little Eeyore, That'll go far to even the score When I add it up In the deep of the night

Second Bridge:
I'm not one to throw in the towel
More likely to shrug trouble off than scowl
Cause it's also true when I'm with you
I can take the blows and somehow pull through
So I'm gonna hang in to the end of the show.

(Solo)
Repeat Second Bridge:

Last Verse:
I been a donkey, been a mule, I got down but now it's all cool
That's alright, That's okay, I got you
That's alright, That's okay, I got you
That's alright, That's okay, I got you
